Insufficient TRX for Fee: What It Means and 4 Fixes

Insufficient TRX for Fee: What It Means and 4 Fixes

In short: "insufficient TRX for fee" means your wallet estimated the network cost of the transfer and your TRX balance is below it. As of 21.10.2026 a USDT transfer with no energy burns roughly 6.4–13.4 TRX. Fix it by adding TRX, renting energy, or both; in most wallets nothing was charged yet.

What does "insufficient TRX for fee" actually mean?

Your wallet is doing arithmetic before it lets you sign. It estimates how much energy and bandwidth the transaction will need, subtracts what your address already has, and converts the shortfall into TRX at the current network prices. If your TRX balance is lower than that, it shows a warning. Exact wording varies: "insufficient TRX", "not enough TRX to pay network fee", "insufficient balance for gas" and similar.

This is a pre-flight check, not a blockchain error. In most wallets nothing has been broadcast at this point, so no fee is taken. That is the main difference from the on-chain OUT_OF_ENERGY error, where the transaction ran, failed and still cost you TRX. Our TRON transaction errors reference lists where each message comes from.

Why does the wallet need TRX if I'm sending USDT?

USDT TRC20 is a token contract on TRON, and TRON charges in its own resources:

  • Energy pays for running the contract code. There is no free energy allowance.
  • Bandwidth pays for the bytes of the transaction. Each activated address gets 600 free points a day.

When either is missing, the network burns TRX to cover it, per TRON's resource model. USDT itself cannot pay, which surprises users who arrive from custodial apps or exchanges, where the platform pays the fee for you.

How much TRX does the wallet expect?

The figure depends on the recipient and on what resources you already hold. Here is the network cost on 21.10.2026, with energy at 100 SUN and bandwidth at 1,000 SUN per byte:

Your resourcesRecipient holds USDTRecipient never held USDT
No energy, free bandwidth left~6.43 TRX~13.03 TRX
No energy, free bandwidth used up~6.78 TRX~13.38 TRX
~65,000 energy delegated, free bandwidth left0 TRX~6.5 TRX shortfall
~131,000 energy delegated, free bandwidth left0 TRX0 TRX
Enough energy, free bandwidth used up~0.35 TRX~0.35 TRX

Wallets often add a safety margin on top of the estimate, so the number they ask for can be higher than the network's actual charge. You only pay what is used, but you need the margin on the balance to get past the check.

How do I fix insufficient TRX for fee?

Four fixes, from the most common to the most specific.

Fix 1: Add TRX to the address

The simplest fix. Get enough TRX for the scenario in the table plus a few TRX of buffer, then retry. The common routes are an exchange withdrawal on the TRON network, an in-wallet card purchase, or a friend sending TRX to your address. Our guide on how to get TRX for gas compares them, including which ones work when you hold nothing but USDT.

Before retrying, check on Tronscan that the TRX has arrived. Then reopen the send screen so the wallet re-estimates.

Fix 2: Rent energy instead of burning TRX

If you rent energy and have it delegated to your address, the contract call is paid from that energy and no TRX is burned for it. For a transfer to an existing USDT holder, around 65,000 energy is enough; for a first-time holder, around 131,000. With free bandwidth still available that day, the transfer can complete with no TRX spent.

Two practical points:

  • Wait for the delegation to show. The wallet only counts energy that is already on the address. Refresh the resources view, then open the send screen.
  • Some wallets still check TRX. A few wallets keep a minimum TRX requirement in their fee check even when energy covers everything. If yours does, a small TRX balance alongside the rental clears it.

The full walkthrough, including how to rent energy when you have no TRX to pay for it, is in our guide on sending USDT without TRX. EnergyTRX rents energy for 15 minutes to 3 days, paid from a Telegram bot balance that you can top up with TRX or USDT TRC20.

Fix 3: Check you are not paying the new-holder premium by mistake

If the wallet asks for around 13 TRX when you expected about 6, the recipient address has likely never held USDT. That is legitimate: the contract writes a new balance entry, which roughly doubles the energy. But it is also a useful sanity check:

  • Did you paste the right address? A look-alike address from a poisoning attack would also be "new".
  • Is the recipient expecting USDT on this address? If they normally receive on another one, ask.
  • If you pay this person repeatedly, the premium only applies to the first transfer.

Fix 4: Free up or wait for bandwidth

If the shortfall is small, around 0.35 TRX, the missing piece is bandwidth, not energy. You have used your 600 free daily points, usually because you already sent a transaction today. Options:

  • Wait. Free bandwidth regenerates over 24 hours.
  • Add a small amount of TRX to cover the bytes.
  • Rent bandwidth if you send several transactions a day.

What should I not do when I see this warning?

  • Don't send TRX that is meant for fees to an exchange deposit address by mistake. Always top up your own wallet's address.
  • Don't import your seed phrase into a "fee helper" site. Nobody needs it to send you TRX or energy.
  • Don't fund exactly the estimate. If energy prices or the contract's dynamic multiplier move before you sign, the transaction may fail on-chain and burn the TRX you sent.
  • Don't keep retrying unchanged. If the wallet still warns after a top-up, re-check which recipient you selected and whether the TRX or energy has really arrived on the same address.

Once the address has either enough TRX or enough delegated energy, the warning disappears and the transfer behaves like any other. If you send USDT often, keeping a small TRX float plus energy for the transfers themselves avoids running into the check at an awkward moment.

Send your next transfer on rented energy

Right now, 65,000 energy for an hour is 3.15 TRX. Energy on your address in seconds, no keys needed.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my wallet say insufficient TRX for fee when I have USDT?

TRON network fees are paid in energy and bandwidth, or in TRX burned when those are missing. USDT cannot pay them. The wallet estimates the cost and blocks the send if your TRX balance is below it.

Was I charged anything when I saw the insufficient TRX warning?

Usually not. In most wallets the warning is a pre-check before the transaction is signed and broadcast, so nothing reaches the blockchain. You can confirm on Tronscan that no new transaction appears from your address.

How much TRX do I need to clear the warning?

As of 21.10.2026 about 6.4 TRX for a USDT transfer to an existing holder, about 13 TRX to a first-time holder, plus about 0.35 TRX if your free bandwidth is used up. Wallets may add their own margin.

Can I clear the warning without buying TRX?

Yes, by renting energy for the transfer. With enough delegated energy and free bandwidth, the transfer burns no TRX. Some wallets still want a small TRX balance before they let you sign.

I have 5 TRX. Why is that not enough?

A standard USDT transfer without energy burns about 6.4 TRX, and a transfer to a new holder about 13 TRX. Five TRX falls short in both cases.
