How to Create a TRC20 Wallet: TronLink, Trust, Ledger
In short: to create a TRC20 wallet, install a TRON-compatible wallet such as TronLink or Trust Wallet, generate a new wallet, write down the 12-word seed phrase offline, and copy the address that starts with T. Setup takes 3–10 minutes; a Ledger adds a hardware layer. The address goes live on-chain after its first incoming transfer.
What exactly is a TRC20 wallet?
A "TRC20 wallet" is simply a TRON wallet. TRC20 is the token standard on TRON, the same way ERC20 is on Ethereum, and USDT TRC20 is the Tether contract deployed on TRON. Every TRON address can hold TRX and any TRC20 token at once. If you want the background on the standard itself, read what TRC20 is.
What makes a wallet "TRC20" in practice:
- It generates TRON key pairs and shows an address in Base58 format that starts with
Tand is 34 characters long. - It can sign TRON transactions, including smart contract calls such as a USDT transfer.
- It lets you see and spend TRX, which the network burns for fees when you have no energy or bandwidth.
If you come from MetaMask, note that your 0x address cannot receive USDT TRC20. You need a separate TRON address. Several multi-chain wallets create one for you from the same seed phrase.
Which wallet should I pick before I start?
Each of the three most common options suits a different user. Our TRC20 wallet comparison goes deeper; this table covers what matters at setup time.
| TronLink | Trust Wallet | Ledger (hardware) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type | TRON-native, mobile app and browser extension | Multi-chain mobile app and extension | Hardware device plus Ledger Wallet app |
| Seed phrase | Generated in the app, backup prompted | Generated in the app, backup prompted | Generated and kept on the device |
| TRON-specific features | Energy and bandwidth view, staking, DApp browser | TRX and TRC20 send/receive, swaps, on-ramp | TRX and TRC10/TRC20 via the Tron app |
| Hardware pairing | Can connect a Ledger (extension supports Nano S, Nano X, Stax, Flex) | Not the focus | Is the hardware layer |
| Best for | Regular TRON users, people renting energy | Users who also hold assets on other chains | Larger balances, long-term storage |
How do I create a TRC20 wallet in TronLink?
- Install TronLink from the official site or your device's app store. Check the developer name before installing: fake wallet apps are a common theft vector.
- Choose Create Wallet, set a local password, and name the wallet.
- TronLink generates a mnemonic. Write the words down on paper, in order, and keep them offline. TronLink asks you to back up; the TronLink support centre describes confirming the words in order before finishing.
- Copy your address from the home screen. It starts with
T.
TronLink uses a single-HD structure: the first wallet you create or import becomes the master HD wallet, and additional wallets derive from it. Mnemonics imported later appear as separate wallets. Because TronLink shows energy and bandwidth directly, it is convenient if you plan to rent energy or stake.
How do I create one in Trust Wallet?
- Install Trust Wallet and choose Create a new wallet.
- Back up the secret phrase. Trust Wallet offers several backup methods; whichever you choose, keep a written copy that does not live on the same phone.
- In the asset list, search for TRON (TRX) and, if it is not shown, enable Tether (TRC20). Make sure you pick the TRC20 version of USDT, not ERC20 or BEP20.
- Tap the asset, then Receive, to see your T-address and QR code. TRX and USDT TRC20 share the same TRON address.
Trust Wallet is self-custodial: the keys stay on your device and the company does not hold your funds. The trade-off is that the app, being multi-chain, shows fewer TRON resource details than TronLink.
How do I set up a Ledger for TRC20?
- Initialise the device and write down its 24-word recovery phrase. This phrase never touches your computer.
- Open Ledger Wallet (the app formerly called Ledger Live), go to My Ledger and install the Tron app. Ledger notes that this app is developed and supported by the TRON community.
- Add a Tron account and copy the receive address, verifying it on the device screen.
- Ledger's own guidance is that a new Tron account must receive at least 0.1 TRX before USDT and other tokens become visible.
You can also pair the Ledger with TronLink or connect it to Tronscan for staking and DApps. In that setup TronLink is just the interface; signing still happens on the device. Ledger has said that staking TRX is not supported directly in its own app, which is why many users use one of those interfaces for it.
Why does my new address show "account not found"?
A TRON address exists mathematically the moment it is generated, but the network does not know about it until something is sent to it. Until then, Tronscan and some wallets show the account as inactive. The first incoming TRX transfer (or a TRC10 transfer, or a contract that sends TRX) creates the account. Per TRON's account documentation, the sender pays a 1 TRX creation fee on the standard path. Our guide to activating a TRON address covers the options in detail.
This has a direct cost implication for USDT. Sending USDT to an address that has never held USDT costs roughly double the energy, around 130,000 instead of about 65,000 on 21.10.2026, because the contract has to write a new balance entry.
How do I keep my new wallet safe from day one?
Most losses with new wallets come from setup shortcuts, not from cryptography. A few habits help a lot:
- Never store the seed phrase as a screenshot, cloud note or email draft. Paper or metal, offline, ideally in two places.
- No legitimate service needs your seed phrase. Energy rental, swaps, support desks and exchanges only ever need your public address.
- Send a small test amount first. Confirm it arrives at the address you expect before moving larger sums.
- Verify the address on more than the first few characters. Address-poisoning scams create look-alike addresses that match the start and end.
- Keep some TRX or plan for energy. Without either, you will not be able to move USDT out.
For a full checklist, see our USDT TRC20 security guide. Once the wallet is created and backed up, the first deposit is the real test: send a small amount of TRX, check it on Tronscan, and only then share the address for larger USDT payments.
Send your next transfer on rented energy
Right now, 65,000 energy for an hour is 3.15 TRX. Energy on your address in seconds, no keys needed.
Frequently asked questions
Is a TRC20 wallet different from a TRON wallet?
No. TRC20 is a token standard on TRON, so any TRON wallet address that starts with T can hold TRX and TRC20 tokens such as USDT. There is no separate TRC20 address.
Can I use my MetaMask wallet for USDT TRC20?
Not natively. MetaMask addresses start with 0x and belong to EVM networks. USDT TRC20 must go to a TRON address starting with T, created in a TRON-compatible wallet.
Why can't I see USDT in my new wallet?
A freshly generated address does not exist on-chain until it receives TRX or another transfer. Some wallets, Ledger's included, only display tokens after the account is activated. You may also need to add USDT to the visible token list.
Do I need to pay to create a TRC20 wallet?
Generating the wallet is free. The address becomes active on-chain with its first incoming transfer, and the sender of that transfer pays the account creation cost.
Can I use the same seed phrase in TronLink and Trust Wallet?
Usually yes, both import standard mnemonic phrases, but derivation paths can differ between apps. After importing, compare the T-address with the original before sending funds to it.
